Nico Viera
[attr="class","dropfrumbodytxt"]PERSONALITY:
Nico was once a charismatic and humorous person. Raised in a hostile environment, he learned to counter it with his charm and humor, winning most people over. He rarely allowed others to bring him down - or he did his best to hide it. He was loyal to his best friend and always put others first. He was a hard worker and never complained about anything. He tried to see the good in every situation, especially in the face of Raphael, who openly degraded him.
However, after Nico's service in World War I, Raphael shaped him into his best soldier and assassin. In doing so, he slowly and painfully stripped Nico of his humanity. He shattered his soul and left a vessel. Now Nico is a quiet and deadly person. He no longer says much and is always set on an assignment, eve long after Raphael's death. He has no care for humanity anymore and no longer has remorse for anyone or anything.
HISTORY:
Nico Viera was never destined for greatness. From the start, he was born a deviant and discarded like a pariah. He was born to an Austrian mother and Antonio Viera, a powerful and wealthy man in late 1800s Italy, but a follower in every sense possible. His father was born in 1851 during a fractured Italy. At the age of 16 he went to war against Austria, and met Raphael Valenti. Antonio was unfortunate yet happy enough to follow Raphael like a loyal pet, condoned to being a follower for the rest of his life. With propaganda spreading for a unified Italia, Antonio filled his heart with national pride and found a leader and life-long friend in Raphael. But war had hardened the young men, and they witnessed a haunting sight: a werewolf savagely killing Italian soldiers. By 1870, Italy had unified and the war had ended, but it hadn't for Raphael. He began this endless goal of beginning an organization known as the Verum Ventatores. After witnessing such an attack, Raphael became obsessed with the idea of purity and he immediately brought Antonio into this plan. Antonio, coming from a wealthy family himself, became his second-in-command, and with Raphael's inheritance and knack for politics, he started the organization with ease. Raphael had an ability to persuade and convince any crowd to his bidding, and with that grew the Verum Venatores. They became obsessed with the idea of hunting Lucifer as to cut off the head of all monsters and abominations.
However, Nico's story began a little differently. In war, Antonio met an Austrian nurse with the features of an Italian woman and quickly fell in love with her. Despite Raphael's objections, Antonio married her and the two quickly began a family. By 1887, after their first year of marriage, the two got pregnant with Nico. The couple was joyous and praying for a son to inherit Antonio's own fortune. Around the same time, Raphael's wife also found herself pregnant. It was a happy time for both Antonio and Raphael, with the expectancies of sons to inherit their dreams. And by some wicked sense of humor, only Raphael got what he hoped. But Antonio did not. Complications during Nico's birth triggered a shift in his mother, revealing her to be what she truly was: a shapeshifter. She had shed her tan Italian features and unveiled her true porcelain skin and average looks, compared to her gorgeous Italian ones. Antonio could no longer face his wife and her betrayal and left to tell Raphael. Nico was born but was taken away from his mother immediately and through Raphael's quick actions, his mother never laid eyes on her baby boy again. Antonio did not protest against the murder of his wife, but could not bring himself to kill his own son. So for the first few years of his life, Antonio raised his son. But knowledge of the blood that ran in his veins, he sold him off to Raphael as if he were nothing more than an object and quickly remarried. He and his knew wife had a girl not long after and raised her to be heir instead, Nico long disowned.
But at such a young age, Nico did not truly understood what had occurred. He became Raphael's stable boy, but he found a friend in Raphael's son, Romeo. Raphael was grooming his son as heir but that did not stop the two young boys from quickly bonding. As the years progressed, Nico became more and more aware of the hatred Raphael had for him, and discovered the reason during his first shape shift. He feared it and found solace in the sea. When he was not spending his time with Romeo, he was out sailing or swimming. Romeo feared the water but it was Nico's only escape from the hateful stares and repulsed looks. Regardless of the fashion he was treated in and the hostile environment he was raised in, Nico became charismatic. He had a way with people, able to charm even those who had once gazed upon him with distaste. He had an easy manner and a light sense of humor. Eventually those who had once hated him for the abomination that they saw him as warmed up to the young man. Women adored him and stared with undeniable infatuation, but it was not women he was into. In the secrets of the night, it was men he'd bed. Except he had made the foolish mistake of falling in love with his best and only friend, Romeo Valenti, the son and heir of the Verum Venatores - an organization that existed to eradicate monsters and his own existence. Romeo was soon married off to his half-sister, Emilia, for political reasons.
The two remained close, regardless,, even as young adults, which displeased Raphael greatly. He feared that Nico, the monster in his eyes, would have an influence over his son so he sent Nico off to war which is now known as World War I. And so Nico fought bravely and evaded death. But Romeo followed him to war and found his way to Nico. Upon learning of this, Raphael used his contacts to get Nico out and leaving behind his son. Instead he began shaping Nico to be his perfect soldier. He had the Science faction experiment on him, taking his blood and using it against him. He was tortured and conditioned to obey ever word. Exhausted and broken from the war, it did not take long to achieve this. He began him on assignments, using Nico's shapeshifting abilities to his advantage. With this advantage, Nico became his deadliest and best assassin. But the final thing that truly broke him was when Raphael broke the news that Romeo was killed in war.
However, his sister, Emilia, confessed that Romeo was alive as soon as she discovered that Raphael had sent a vampire to kill his own son. So she convinced him to leave and find Romeo before it was too late. Disobeying Raphael's orders for once, Nico set out to find Romeo and when he did, he discovered Romeo had been turned by the vampire instead of killed. Raphael was always several steps of everyone, though, and when he realized Nico had disobeyed his orders to find Romeo, he sent a witch after the two. He knew Nico's shapeshifting abilities would make it difficult to track him down otherwise, so he would find him through magic. And he ordered that their lives be linked. He could not stand for insubordination and thus decided to make them both martyrs of war: kill one, kill the other. Except his plans were thwarted when the vampire turned Romeo instead of killing him, linking Nico's life to Romeo's new immortality. Nico found Romeo, surrounded by drained bodies.
He knew that saving Romeo meant saving his last chance of humanity, so he shifted into another stranger, acting as bait. But when Romeo came to attack him, Nico shifted into Romeo, mirroring the monster Romeo had become. The shock of seeing Nico shift so easily, something he had once struggled with, shocked Romeo into reality. The moment he shifted into Romeo, the witch linked their lives, a bond setting in place between the two. Eventually he gained control but grew hungry a lot quicker. Unaware of the magical link the two now shared, they returned to their home for vengeance. Instead it was Emilia they found and at her initial shock of seeing them both alive, she confessed what Raphael did by having their lives linked. Thus, their new goal became to undo the spell the witch placed on them.
But it wasn't an entirely tragic life. For once, Romeo and Nico got the ending they had once dreamed of. They were together, free to love each other with no fear of being discovered. It was almost a happily ever after. Almost. Nico could never forget all his training that Raphael ingrained into him. So he began hunting and assassinating new targets behind Romeo's back. Until one night when Romeo followed him into the woods covered in blood with Nico disoriented and unable to grasp who he was. After this incident, Nico began distancing himself from Romeo. He stopped saying much until he completely stopped talking to Romeo. He stayed by Romeo's side, though, never leaving him but he always returned at night to kill. With every target he shifted into, Nico would sometimes lose sight of himself and forget who he was. His shapeshifting abilities became an obligation, a weapon.
Until one day Romeo left him. Without a word, Romeo left and Nico did not try finding him. For decades after, Nico remained on his own. He only knew Romeo was alive from the bond they still shared. It was comforting but also a curse, to feel him so close, and yet have no idea where he was. Which brings him to the present-day. Nico came to Mystic Falls, a town full of supernatural, with the warped idea of assassinating monsters like him to stop them from sharing the same fate he did.
